Jorge Taiana

 

Jorge E. Taiana holds a degree in sociology from the University of Buenos Aires and conducted post-graduate studies in FLACSO. He has developed academic research activities with the support of the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research of Argentina (CONICET) and has been a professor at the University of Buenos Aires and the University of Quilmes, in Argentina, among other institutions.  He is a board member of the National Council for Foreign Affairs (CARI) and of the Professional Council of Sociology in Argentina.  He has worked with Nobel Peace Prize winner Adolfo Perez Esquivel in SERPAJ and is a member of the Centro de Estudios Legales y Sociales (CELS) and other important human rights organisations and institutions in Argentina.

 

In 1989 he was appointed Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship of Argentina and subsequently he served as Ambassador to Guatemala. In 1996, and for the following five years, he became the Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington DC.  During those years he visited Latin America, the Caribbean and North America in order to examine the human rights situation.  In 2003 he was appointed Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Commerce and Worship. In 2005 he became Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Commerce and Worship, a position he held for the following five years.  Between September 2010 and February 2011 he held the role of "Special Representative" on behalf of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.  Currently, he is the Director General of the International Centre for Political Studies at the San Martin University in Argentina.

 

Jorge Taiana has shared his expertise in international affairs and human rights in numerous conferences and publications around the world.  He has also been distinguished and decorated by several countries and institutions.
